Home Repair Service

WHAT IS THE HOME REPAIR SERVICE?
The Home Repair Service is a Seneca County program geared to senior citizens desiring to remain in their homes. This program makes available to people aged 60+ home repairs without the high cost of labor. It is funded in part by the Seneca County and the New York State Office for the Aging, and donations from the clients. 


WHO QUALIFIES FOR THIS SERVICE?

Any person who is 60 years of age or older, and who is a resident of Seneca County may receive the Home Repair Service. 
        

WHAT KIND OF REPAIRS CAN BE DONE?

Minor carpentry and maintenance work by a qualified home repair service technician includes electrical and plumbing and window repairs as well as installation of hot water tanks, storm doors, Venetian blinds, and curtain rods. Some projects such as wheelchair ramps are built to code and accomplished with volunteer assistance. First floor gutter cleaning is also available.

WHAT KIND OF REPAIRS CANNOT BE DONE?

Projects requiring special tools, work that is the obligation of the landlord, heating system work, roof repair, scraping ice from the roof or major repairs cannot be done.


HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO GET THIS SERVICE?

Priority is given to emergencies, i.e., Building a ramp, link to life and to frail elderly. Generally there is not a long waiting period and service is usually prompt.


WHAT DOES IT COST?

Materials used in repair jobs are paid for by the client. The program operates on a donation basis. Six dollars per hour is suggested. All contributions to this service are free and voluntary. 


HOW DO YOU GET SERVICE?

Call the American Red Cross, at (315) 568-9436 and ask for the Home Repair Service. Give your name, date of birth, telephone number, address and the job that you would like done. The Home Repair person will call you to schedule a visit. Our worker will be very clear about what materials are needed for the job and will even go to the store for the materials if you are unable to do the shopping.
